A Day in Puerto Plata: Your Guide to the Dominican Republic Port Stop on MSC World America

You wake up to the gentle rumble of the ship slowing down, as it makes it’s way to the Taíno Bay Port in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, draw back your stateroom curtains, and there it is, the lush green mountains of the Dominican Republic’s north coast easing into view. This is one of the best things about cruising aboard MSC World America: a brand new country appearing outside your balcony every single morning.

Then the gangway drops, the hot Caribbean air hits your face, and you’re standing on the sun-drenched Amber Coast. Welcome to Puerto Plata, one of the most vibrant, historically rich, and rewarding port stops on the MSC World America Puerto Plata itinerary, and a place that always leaves passengers wishing they had more time ashore.

This would be my 4th time in the Dominican Republic, (we had previously stayed at Serenade Punta Cana in 2024, and then at the Royalton Bavaro in 2025, where I celebrated my 50th Birthday with 28 friends and family) and I have been to this cruise port also in 2024 with the MSC Seascape.

If you’re sailing on MSC World America’s 7-night Eastern Caribbean route out of PortMiami, Puerto Plata is one of the crown jewels of the journey. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your day on the Amber Coast.

Arriving at Taíno Bay: MSC World America’s Puerto Plata Home Port

MSC World America docks at Taíno Bay, Puerto Plata’s modern cruise terminal that opened in December 2021, fittingly, with an MSC ship making the inaugural call. The terminal was purpose-built to accommodate up to three ships simultaneously and welcome as many as 14,000 passengers in a single day, so you won’t feel the usual scramble of a cramped port.

Taíno Bay, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

Taíno Bay is more than just a dock. It’s a destination in itself, like a really beautiful resort, complete with commercial spaces, restaurants, bars, pools and even it’s own lazy river, right at the pier. But don’t linger too long here, the real magic lies just beyond the gates. The terminal is strategically placed steps from Puerto Plata’s historic district, making it one of the most walkable port landings in the Caribbean.

The Amber Coast: A Bit of Context

Puerto Plata is the capital of the province that shares its name, sprawling across roughly 70 miles of coastline along the Dominican Republic’s northern shore. It earned the nickname “the Amber Coast” for a very literal reason: the region sits atop some of the world’s richest deposits of amber, the ancient fossilized tree resin prized for its warm golden hues, and occasionally for the prehistoric insects and plant matter trapped within.

The city carries deep colonial roots. Founded by Spanish explorer Nicolás de Ovando in the early 1500s, Puerto Plata was among the first European settlements in the Americas. Walking its streets on your MSC World America Puerto Plata port day is a living lesson in Caribbean history, architecture, and resilience, all woven together under swaying palms and a near-perpetual blue sky.

Top Things to Do Ashore

A Highlight of our Stop in Puerto Plata

Vivonté Cigar Factory and Lounge

One of the most memorable stops on our MSC World America Puerto Plata day was a visit to the Vivonté Cigar Factory and Lounge, and it comes with a personal backstory.

When we docked here in 2022, my husband wandered solo on a hunt to find Dominican Cigars and typed in “Cigar store near me” into Google and this is where he ended up. He met Glenn Hamilton, the owner of Vivonté Cigar and immediately connected because Glenn was also a Canadian. He left Canada and to start Vivonté in the Dominican. They spent the next 2 hours talking about Canadian Baseball and sports. So fast forward 4 years later, my husband vowed to pay a re-visit.

Unfortunately, Glenn passed away and we met with his son Austin, who gave us a tour of the factory. Even though I don’t smoke cigars, it was fascinating to watch the craft of cigar making because they really take pride in their work and you can tell the quality of their product from the love and passion that is put forth.

Viator / The Gen X Wanderer

Disclaimer*: Booking through Viator is a great way to explore beyond the cruise line’s offerings, often with more flexibility, unique experiences and generally much cheaper. However, it’s important review: pickup location, proximity from the cruise port, excursion timing, travel time and return time to ensure everything aligns with your ship’s “all aboard time”. Cruise ships will not wait for passengers delayed on independent excursions. All third-party excursions are your responsibility.

What to Eat and Drink

Your MSC World America Puerto Plata port day is a genuine food opportunity — don’t waste it eating onboard. Look for mangú – mashed plantains served with sautéed onions — at local markets and street stalls near the port. Sancocho, the hearty Dominican stew of root vegetables and slow-cooked meat, is comfort food elevated to an art form. Fresh tropical fruit smoothies and coconut water from vendors near the beach are non-negotiable in the Caribbean heat.

For a sit-down meal, restaurants around Parque Central and along the waterfront serve excellent fresh seafood — local catch prepared with herbs and spices you simply won’t find anywhere else. Eat here. The food alone is a reason to leave the terminal behind.

Shopping for Souvenirs

Puerto Plata produces some of the Caribbean’s finest amber jewelry, and you’ll find it everywhere from the Amber Museum gift shop to boutiques along the historic district. Equally prized is larimar, a rare blue volcanic gemstone found only in the Dominican Republic, crafted into pendants, rings, and bracelets. These make meaningful, genuinely local souvenirs rather than the mass-produced trinkets found at most ports.

Practical Tips for the Day

  • Wear comfortable shoes. Between the historic district streets and the cable car hike, you’ll be on your feet.
  • Book excursions in advance. MSC World America’s shore excursion desk fills up quickly for popular options like the cable car and Sosúa snorkeling. I’ve also listed some options from Viator which will save you $$.
  • Bring cash. While many places accept cards, smaller vendors and street stalls prefer Dominican pesos or US dollars.
  • Stay aware of your belongings. Like most Caribbean ports, Puerto Plata rewards sensible precautions, organized tours are a great way to explore with peace of mind.
  • Check back-on-board times carefully. MSC World America is a massive ship with nearly 7,000 passengers, the port schedule runs tight.

Back on Board

But as you settle back in your stateroom, you watch Puerto Plata’s green mountains fade into the horizon, the Amber Coast has a way of lingering. One day is never quite enough. That’s the particular cruelty, and the particular magic, of a cruising.

The MSC World America Puerto Plata stop is one of the itinerary’s genuine highlights, a city with history, flavour, and personality that earns its place among the best cruise port experiences in the Caribbean. Go early, walk far, eat well, and stay out until the last possible minute.
